How to Start Your Harley-Davidson Without Your Key Fob

Jul. 13 2023 News By fpain

Now days, you don't need an actual key to start your Harley-Davidson motorcycle as many come with a key fob. When in range, these key fobs communicate with your H-D's Smart Security System allowing the rider to start the bike.

Sometimes, though, we end up losing/misplacing our key fob, but that won't necessarily render your bike useless. All you need is the motorcycle/fob's PIN code. This can be found on the small plastic tag that came with your key and fob. If you can't remember/find your pin then you'll want to contact your local Harley-Davidson dealership for assistance. You can also change your PIN code and those instructions are further down the page.

So, if you know your pin, then follow these instructions on disarming your H-D's security system so you can start your bike.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to IGNITION. Then, immediately hold both turn signal buttons until five (5) dashes appear in the odometer window.
  2. Using your left turn signal button, select the first digit of your PIN by pressing it the number of times it takes for the first digit to appear.
  3. Press the right turn signal switch one time to move to the next digit.
  4. Select the second digit of your PIN using the left turn signal button.
  5. Click the right turn signal button one time to move to the next digit.
  6. Select the third digit of your PIN using the left turn signal button
  7. Press the right turn signal button one time to move to the next digit.
  8. Select the fourth digit of your PIN using the left turn signal.
  9. Press the right turn signal switch one time to move to the next digit.
  10. Select the fifth digit of your PIN using the left turn signal button.
  11. Press the right turn signal indicator one time to advance to the next digit.
  12. Finally, press the right turn signal switch once and the security system is now disarmed.

Summary, use your left turn signal to select the numbers in your PIN code and the right turn signal to advance to the next digit of the PIN.

Did you know that you can actually change your bike's PIN code to something easier to remember? There are a few steps to personalizing your PIN code, so if you want to do so, then follow these instructions.

  • The first thing you need to do is figure out what your five (5) digit code will be. Remember, each digit can only be 1-9.
  • Now, with your bike's key fob in range, turn ignition switch ON - OFF - ON - OFF - ON.
  • Press left turn button two (2) times.
  • Press right turn button once then release.
  • * At this point, both turn signals should flash three (3) times and the current PIN code will appear on the odometer window. The first digit should be blinking. *
  • Using your left turn signal button, select the first digit of your NEW PIN by pressing it the number of times it takes for the first digit to appear.
  • Press the right turn button one time then release. The new first digit will replace the current number in the odometer window then you will advance to the next digit.
  • Repeat the process of using your left turn button to select the new number of your new PIN while using the right turn button to advance to the next digit.
  • After selecting all five (5) digits of your new PIN code, press the right turn signal one more time to turn off the security system alarm. The odometer display will return to the mileage reading.
  • Turn your ignition switch to the OFF position and your new PIN will be set.

Another remedy for losing your key fob is to simply trade your bike in on a new H-D and wouldn't you know it, we've got a great selection of new and pre-owned motorcycles.
