The ultimate customization contest- the Battle of the Kings (BOTK) is on! Harley-Davidson, being the leader in customization, has invited all U.S. dealers to build the ultimate customized motorcycle and compete with an elite group of custom builders for the title of U.S. Battle of the Kings Champion. Started in 2015, the largest dealer custom bike build competition in the world, International competitors in the past 4 years have submitted over 500 builds.
Competition revolves around three categories. The bike had to be a 2018 or 2019 New Harley-Davidson motorcycle in a style that falls within one of the following three categories:
DIRT: Tracker, Scrambler and Desert Sled
CHOP: Bobber, Traditional and Hardtail
RACE: Street, Sport and Track
Along the way, customers will be voting to determine the People's Choice Winners. There will be up to 25 Peoples Choice winners chosen by online voting. There will be 6 winners per category selected by an H-D judging panel, 18 total. There will be 3 Category finalist, 1 winner will be selected by an H-D judging panel in each of the 3 Categories as the National Winner. One (1) U.S. Battle of the Kings Champion Winner will be selected from among the National Winners. The U.S. Champion will then go on to compete at a global level against other country winners for the chance of being crowned the Global Battle of the Kings Champion in Milan, Italy at the EICMA International Motorcycle Exhibition.
To be involved in this years competition, we were asked to partner with a local trade school. We chose Abilene High School's Auto Service Technology Dept. Their teacher, William Kirby is a long time motorcycle enthusiast an could see this event as a way to create excitement for his class. We saw it as an opportunity to inspire the students to become the next generation of skilled trades professionals by exposing them to the exciting world of creativity, customization prowess and technical precision needed to compete in BOTK.
For most Motorcycling Enthusiasts, riding is a passion. One of the problems we have is finding employees that can relate to that passion. With Harley-Davidson's 10 year goal of building 2 million new riders, those riders (and the dealership) will need service technicians and customization experts for the future. With this in mind, this year's competition, especially for us, is about more than the finished product. It is about the journey of the team including the relationship with the school partner, in which we hope to ignite that passion of motorcycling and the potential it holds.
Here at Kent's Harley-Davidson, celebrating our 55th year in Business, we are proud of our many years of community involvement, and take pleasure in being able to involve Abilene High School and the Abilene Community in this venture. We are also extremely grateful to the Abilene Independent School District for allowing their students to be involved, without which, we could not compete.
